Welcome! My name is Marise Lyra. I am the Alumni Program Coordinator for Center for New Americans (CNAM). Here on these pages, you will be able to stay connected with our school and with each other, learn about job and education opportunities, as well as share successes and support each other.
I've been part of CNAM community for nearly twenty years, first as a student, then as an alum. While studying for my teaching degree, I accepted a position as a member of the board of directors. After graduation, I became an ESOL teacher. If you are a CNAM alum and you would like to share your story here, email me a short story about what you have done since left CNAM and include a photo. |

My name is Cecilia Acosta. I came from Puerto Rico four years ago. After I arrived in Massachusetts, Center for New Americans helped me to find a job and learn English. Later, Peg Johnson helped me with the process of enrolling in the certificate nursing assistant (CNA) course at Greenfield Community College (GCC). I graduated from GCC and am now working as a CNA.
My advice to new students: speak English all the time, and tell your teacher your goals. They can guide you to them. Don't give up! You can be what you want to be. |
I am Hamid Id Abdella. Starting a new life in the US, a completely different one, would have been very difficult without all the help and support Center for New Americans (CNAM) provided. CNAM assisted me with finding a job when I first arrived to America. My teachers helped me learn and improve my English skills, which led me to go to college. With further guidance from the teachers at CNAM, I enrolled in the CNC program at Greenfield Community College. Upon graduating in May, I will begin a career in Manufacturing.

I am Maricella Obando-Moya. I’m very grateful for the support and kindness that I received from Center for New Americans (CNAM). Moving to another country is a challenge that is even more difficult if you don’t speak the language.
For me, the teachers and staff of the CNAM are like mothers and fathers, guiding their baby’s first steps into a new world and life. We utter our first word in English, just like a babies utter their first words. The process is the same. |
Paola Correa Gomez says, "At the Center for New Americans I learned about American life, culture and food, but most important, were the friendships I made with people from around the world."

"Center for New Americans is the best program for new immigransts," Renu Kadian Malik, explained. "The CNAM Teachers are really helpful and friendly. CNAM helped me meet my goals."
